How i overcame vaginismus
I was diagnosed with primary vaginismus by my pelvic health physiotherapist at 28 years old. Since trying to insert my first tampon in my early teens, I avoided anything that might give me that same pain – including tampons, intercourse, and pap tests.
I want anyone who experiences pelvic pain or other pelvic health symptoms to get help as soon as they can by booking an appointment with a pelvic health physiotherapist. I was nervous at first, but pelvic floor physiotherapy appointments became my favourite part of the week. Opening up to my physio in a safe space was cathartic and doing exercises at home with my partner was fun.
My life has drastically changed since seeking help. I’ve completely overcome vaginismus and I birthed two children vaginally. I can have sex however I want to, and I use a menstrual cup. Being more pelvic health aware also helped me learn about my own body, and after exploring my body in the name of rehabilitation, I became comfortable finding self-pleasure.
It can be lonely having a debilitating (or even mild) condition that nobody knows about. Speaking from experience, sharing your struggles with close friends is a gift. I discovered that many of my close friends had the same struggles as me, and they were not sure where to find help. Above all, I want people with pelvic floor symptoms to know that they are not alone, and there is treatment available.
